GBA HQ Music rips: Why aren't more people making these? by Franpa at 10:11 AM EDT on September 21, 2014

Like holy shit this... process... it results in so, so, so sooooo much better quality copies of the songs it isn't even funny! And if you record them to WAV or MP3 format you don't even need to mess with soundfonts anymore when switching between games.

Why aren't there more of these rips? Was there technical issues? Or a lack of interest because it isn't emulation related?

Edit: I've come to the assumption it's because the tool only works with games that used the SappyAudio engine.

I'm really surprised that everyone seems to be finding out about this only now... it's been around for years. Anyway, the main reason there aren't more of these is because they are much harder to work with, and because they don't always sound correct; there are many issues with using a soundfont + midi to emulate the GBA sound chip, and it doesn't always come out sounding correct.

I think it's pretty cool. they're nice, and it's a cool technique, and it would be neat to have these alongside the "regular" rips. like kurausukun mentions, though, there's always the question of whether they're accurate or not...some games might fail, and to my knowledge this only works with games that have a specific music engine (although that's most games).

It only works with games that use the Sappy engine, and even a few of those don't work because the data is in a different place (Metroid Zero Mission, for example). Without a doubt, they are higher quality than .gsf rips, but it's more complicated than that.

Indeed. I haven't tried many of the rips (All 3 Castlevania's, Minish Cap and the 2 Golden Sun games) and it seems only the Camelot (Golden Sun) rips aren't working correctly (Missing instruments).

I also discovered that Media Player Classic seems to do some automated instrument substitution for missing instruments... which makes the Saturos battle music pretty okay but definitely not like it should sound xD.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Zelda: Minish Cap sound amazing though.

Edit: Why does Microsoft Sound Recorder suck so much ass now? I recall being able to record songs as high quality MP3's with it back in the Windows 9x days... now it only saves files as shitty 96kbps WMA's? Can't even choose WAV format anymore either...

Who uses Sound Recorder?

I only use GoldWave.

Who uses Sound Recorder?

It was seriously actually useful under Windows 9x, and it wasn't (still isn't) that difficult to extend the recording duration to beyond 60 seconds.

The Windows 7 version is pretty awful, can't even reverse the audio or speed up/slow down the audio etc. in addition to not being able to save as a decent file type :/

The Golden Sun rip is imperfect. There's no way to get the actual synth samples with GBAMusRiper. Possibly with gba2midi though. The same is applicable to any Camelot GBA game. (Mario Tennis/Golf, Golden Sun/TLA)
