Good call on VGMTrans - giving that a go, though it is very clearly not an API, but an executable with a sort of integrated to GUI api-like thing... Btw - do not recommend libgig at all, it does not seem to let you easily add articulations, and its output cannot be read by soundfont tools (I believe because of that).
