It says:

"-2 N: only output the Nth (first is 0) set of stereo channels"

So the right command would be:

"test -o M3_BGM_Airship_edit.wav -2 1 M3_BGM_Airship_edit.bfstm"

Also, why don't you try JACK?
It's really helpful and easy.

You mean we need to purchase a physical thing?

@rebooter

Thanks, that did the trick.
If the command itself is "-2", no wonder it didn't work. :P

Also, I did give JACK a try. I'm not sure if we have the same version, but it seems so damn complicated that I don't even know where to start configuring it.

@TUK
What doesn't work for you? Did you remember to put libg7221_decode.dll, libmpg123-0.dll, libvorbis.dll, in_vgmstream.dll and test.exe in the same dir?
You can get the DLLs from here.
Then use "test -o output.wav inputfile.brstm" to get a multichannel wav, or put "-2 channelnumber" inbetween for each stereo wav.

@Splashman
Yeah, it's pretty confusing to have it "-2".
Anyways JACK works like this: It creates a virtual soundcard and that virtual soundcard plugs it's own output into your real soundcard/output device. You can decide yourself how many input channels your virtual soundcard will have available. You can setup this in the preferences of JACK (which is not that hard, try it).

Then you have to actually route the signal. You have to tell your virtual soundcard that it should route inputchannels 1-14 to outputchannel 1-2. This is done by using the provided app called jackqlt or jackpilot. You don't even have to bother what other possibilities you have with this app (It's huge!) but just have a lookout for "routing". There you have an overview of all the available channels, very easily clickable to connect them.

I had the dlls, yes. Except in_vgmstream.dll.

It seems to work now.... (maybe I typed in something wrong, like the input file name)....

This is exactly what I got:

vgmstream -o test.wav M1_BGM_Ground_Edit.bfstm (I have it named as vgmstream.exe, not test.exe)
decoding M1_BGM_Ground_Edit.bfstm
sample rate 32000 Hz
channels: 14
loop start: 86016 samples (2.6880 seconds)
loop end: 2850816 samples (89.0880 seconds)
stream total samples: 2850816 (89.0880 seconds)
encoding: Gamecube "DSP" 4-bit ADPCM
layout: interleave with short last block
last block interleave: 0x1b80 bytes
metadata from: Nintendo Wii U FSTM Header
samples to play: 5935616 (185.4880 seconds)

My theory is that for some reason I typed "brstm" in the input file name extension instead of "bfstm". Either that or it's one of those strange things where something suddenly works for no reason?

could somebody upload the new smash bros update for someone on mac :(

Edit: got NUS Downloader to work but it's downloading v160 (most likely 1.1.0) as the latest version even though it's not. Anyone know what 1.1.1 corresponds to? Using US title id.
