yeah I looked for it on VA as well and can't find it either

XY Super Training brass is definitely VSL, check the trumpet ensemble library (not 3-4 Trumpets, and it's not in the Kontakt version either)

Hey, I finally found the source of that Gradius III orchestra hit I've posted about a few times recently! It's "Hit-07" on the "Akai Sound Library Vol. 8: GM Sets" CD.

I made an attempt at recreating CLAW FINGER from Silent Hill a few weeks ago. It only uses one sample so it was pretty easy. The original sample sounds a bit different as the in-game sample is only mono of course (which may have been intentional and not just a limitation). But downmix it to mono and you'll see it's much closer to the in-game version (which sounds quite different from the track on the OST CD). Anyway. it's actually a cut from a longer ambient pad on Underfire by AMG with a manual loop. You pretty much wouldn't hear it unless you heard the in-game sample and then skipped to the right part into the original sample.

We already knew XY and ORAS use Omnisphere but a bit more specifically the XY Game Sync track uses one of the "backwards piano" presets during some transitions

No activity in 9 days...... I'm sad about this. Had this thread not been pinned it probably would have been forgotten.

Dunno if this was mentioned before but does anyone know where that rock organ type instrument from HG/SS comes from? It was used in a good portion of the tracks such as the Bicycle music. It was one of the instruments that moved on to gen 5, with a higher quality version being one of the lead instruments in Colress' battle theme. Help would be appreciated.

Wario World's 'Courtyard' uses the Cyclotronic Resonator's Spectral LFO 1.

by Moose at 11:07 PM EDT on April 19, 2016
Speaking of Wario World, I was doing some snooping around in the ProteusVX vst and found some cool big band stabs used here and there in the soundtrack.
Unfortunately, it's a big library so I can't give specific patch names but they should be under "Hit".

The famous "Philly Hit" from what I presume is the SC-88 onwards actually shows up in the "Courtyard" theme, but the release is tighter than what appears in SC-VA. So either it's from a non-roland library or SC-VA is just inaccurate here.

I recently came across the original source files for Mario Kart 64's title theme. I imagine most of them have been ID'd already, but just in case you're curious:

Yeah its already been confirmed by punk7890 and many other sources that Wario World is mostly full SC-88, I have the Sound Canvas VST too and it has a lot of the samples from the game.

I guess some instrument splits could be from other stuff, another user here found the "Yeah" "Ugh" voice SFX from the Courtyard theme on a Korg M1 or M3 I think it was not that long ago. I agree the Proteus VX is known to have Wario World samples for sure as well.

All in all its a great game, too short with a great soundtrack. Totally deserves a remake or a sequel someday.
by punk7890-2 at 2:52 AM EDT on April 20, 2016
@Jasper Mario Kart 64 uses a SC-88 for its instruments. You can check out my remaster of the select menu screen

Yeah, I recall Wario World has a majority of SC-88 instruments.

does anyone have any idea on where the piano here is from?

by alexnaveira at 11:31 AM EDT on April 20, 2016
replying to myself here, a track from the Pokemon BW soundtrack also has the same piano and it's from 2010, so a plugin with the piano has to come from before it - found this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x93hUqPpW4A

edit: apparently it came out in 2012, maybe it's sampled from an earlier library from cinesamples or something

Does anybody have a clue where the sound at .04 might come from? It's scattered throughout the TTYD soundtrack, so I don't assume it's a sample they personally modified themselves.

Also, I've found quite a few songs from TTYD (probably more, but I don't have the best ear for it) utilise samples from Percussive Adventures 1.

Invincible Shadow Queen Theme uses two samples from the Jumanji set.

Theme of The Punies uses Red Corner.

Detective Pennington uses All That Jazz.

There are quite a few ethno drums/others that sound faintly familiar too, but not sure if they came from Percussive or not.

Also, Doshin the Giant uses a sample from Cuckooland Asylum as a sound effect.

Does anyone have JV-2080/1080 or XP-50 samples by any chance? I am looking for a Timpani(-like?) sample. I heard something similar to it on the JV-2080 demos on Synthmania but I can't find that patch anywhere. And I finally got around to testing the Sound Canvas VST module but sadly the one Timpani sample that's on it doesn't sound the same - it sounds much thinner. I know the composer used SC-88 Pro, EX5R and JV-2080, so I'm figuring it could very likely be on the latter. I already have what appears to be a full drum collection from the EX5(R), but I couldn't find anything like it there. Really, I'd be happy with any source, as long as it sounds identical.

"45-fx07-138"

by punk7890-2 at 3:25 PM EDT on April 24, 2016
@Nisto That timpani is definitely from Roland. More than likely from a 2080. Tonality wise, it sounds like a SC-88 timpani but with a lowish boom in it. Also would you mind posting that EX5R drum kit? I'd like to take a look.

EDIT: I figured I had that sample somewhere, turns out I do. Unfortunately I don't know what module it comes from but probably a 2080. Here is the individual split it uses. And here is the entire soundfont it comes from. I even discovered I have a fuller range with tons of velocity Timpani like that.

Does anyone know of any libraries with piano riffs and the likes from 1990-2001? Were there any such libraries at all? I've got a bunch of samples from various games that I've been curious about for quite a while now..

https://www.sendspace.com/file/n6v42b (apologies about inaccurate sample rates)

I guess it is possible some of these have been recorded by the composers beforehand.. ? But I'm sort of hoping otherwise. :P

I'd imagine they were recorded before hand as I heard a SC-88 harp in the mix of one of those samples.

I've just begun listening to the Kirby: Planet Robobot music, and I think I might've heard one of the Roland Fantom pads in "Ayasii" (I forgot what it's called since I don't have one but it sounds like the one used in Super Mario Galaxy when one of Bowser's reactors was discovered). I've been wondering where the synthesized parts came from in the modern Kirby games but didn't expect or recognize anything potentially from a Fantom.

Personally, I don't know, but maybe somebody else would, but I, too, have a timpani-related question. Is there a similar version of the timpanis from Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra with different tuning somewhere out there? Because I heard a better tuned version in Super Paper Mario and a few songs within the modern Kirby games.

Can anybody confirm that these sounds didn't appear in earlier SoundCanvas models? And on a separate note, does FR/LG have more instruments than RS? If so, that would support the theory.

Do you know if any soundfont or VST exists for the SD-90? alexnaveira and I looked, the closest thing we could find was a "THFont.sf2", which doesn't have any drums.

Anyone else think this snare from Gradius III:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2F_6z23ujF6TmdXYjRaX0pJSjA
Might be a TR-707 snare with some heavy reverb applied?
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2F_6z23ujF6QnJRbzFWU3Q2UXM

This is a hunch I've had for a while, but never been able to fully commit to saying one way or the other, so I'd like some opinions. I do know that the crash cymbal in arcade Turtles In Time was from the TR-707, so Konami was using it around that time.

I've also sort of thought that the bass drum:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2F_6z23ujF6SUItUzZ3MzlsbXM
Might be from the Korg M1:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2F_6z23ujF6a0pHTE9qSm0ydHM

The open hi-hat is definitely from the M1, but I've never been able to really decide whether I think that's the right bass drum or not.

Music from Pokemon by PokeMusic at 12:19 PM EDT on May 8, 2016
What VSTs were used in making these sounds in Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and X/Y?
More specifically
- the synth lead in the Psychic music in ORAS that sounds like a heavily distorted synth church organ or electric guitar.
- the accordion in Professor Sycamore's theme in X/Y.
- the rock organ in the Trick House in ORAS.
- the organ in May in ORAS.
- the sawtooth lead (not really a lead since it is polyphonic, and not a pad because it has a percussive attack) in the ORAS PokéMart theme

Alright so I took my question to some reliable sources and found some very interesting points 2 users made on the samples I uploaded from Bomberman Hero for more information on the strings and this percussion sample and learned that the strings could be analog or FM horns with a heavy phase-shifter applied to them or in other words a heavy phased string patch from a synth. One thing we couldn't figure out is where this kind of synth comes from...whoever made it is fudging the delay in the amplitude filter quite a bit as well.

As for the percussion hi-hat clap sample, it's simply a high-pitched hat pattern with a synthetic, no-decay hand clap (like something from an old Yamaha RX7) with a lot of 'verb (probably spring reverb) applied. The clap is processed separately with some predelay in there to give that kind of delayed presence.

All I want to know is where do they come from or how in the hell can I recreate those sounds with updated samples? Because I have plenty of them...yes I need help lol do I need a heavy phase-shifter VST effect or what? Sorry I'm just obsessed with this soundtrack and the game :P by the way those 2 samples were ripped from the song "zip" if it helps. Thanks to anyone who is interested and willing to help.

Woah. What a list.

Great work!
by punk7890-2 at 5:59 PM EDT on June 1, 2016
Nice list!

@dj4uk6cjm I have a few samples from Bomberman Hero. I probably have more but I'm not familiar with the game. These all come from Best Service Giga Pack, except XXL_HOUK2-145.wav. Can't remember at the moment where that came from.

On second thought, I think it comes from Best Service - XXLarge The Killer 2

ORAS Route 113 / XY Power Plant Synth!! by alexnaveira at 11:28 PM EDT on June 1, 2016
ORAS Route 113 Lead / XY Power Plant Lead is from Omnisphere! Preset is Vintage Squares Lead Unison, with longer sustain for Route 113 (I believe).

Although I was an idiot and didn't save the message, the sound designer for SimTunes states he used a Roland JV-1080 and some Korg synth (Either a 01/W or a Z1).

And apparently he had an ARP 2600? I dunno I don't hear anything analog in it.

If any of you want sources for instruments used in Maxis products, pre and post EA, his website has all the details of everything he currently owns.

Also, because I'd REALLY like peer review, could any of you guys please weigh in on my post at the bottom of page 85?

I swear that the newer models of the SoundCanvases sound darker than the older ones, and that plays a big part in all sorts of things!
Yoko Shimomura VST by icecream at 12:13 AM EDT on June 5, 2016
As a sort of late response to Master_E way back when he replied to my comment about Yoko Shimomura's VST usage, I want to get a full list of VSTs that she uses. Right now I know:

- Stylus RMX, several of its presets can be heard in her compositions (look at Alex's post on the previous page for some examples)
- East West/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra, you can hear its strings (especially the solo violin) in a lot of her work (see her work for Kingdom Hearts, Mario & Luigi, and Super Smash Bros., such as Rage Awakened and her remix of Magicant in SSB4)
- East West/Quantum Leap Goliath, not a very prominent example as far as I can tell, but its pan flute can be heard in some of her work (see Xenoblade Chronicles Colony 9, Mario & Luigi Dream Team Sunny Driftwood Shore, and more recently in Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, idk the song because I haven't finished the game yet).

Any others that people have heard? Examples and preset names would be appreciated as well.

Also since Alex posted a list of Stylus loops used in Pokemon, I figured I'd post my own list of loops that are used in other games but not in Pokemon (and yes, some of these entries were from this thread. Actually, all but one were found here). I know I missed some, especially for Kingdom Hearts, so tell me any more you guys find:

Classic Stylus
79 Shifted Jazz
Xenoblade Chronicles - Engage the Enemy

RMX Grooves
70 Dinosaur
Mario Party 8 - All Cleared
Yoshi's Island DS - Giant Bowser
98 The Locals
Yoshi's Woolly World - World 2

SAGE Xpanders:
Metamorphosis
53 Sonar
Mario & Luigi Dream Team - Dreambeets
78 Deepknees

I noticed Clock Tower use a lot of Roland sc 88 presets, like the sound from the scissorman theme is in a preset SFX section call Pick Scrape you can find it in the Sound Canvas VA.

Some of the presets like the synth bass and Ahh preset been used, i even could even remember the drum presets from the sound canvas.

currently seeing what Super Mario Galaxy sounds I can get out of Sound Canvas for ios, as it surely shares some waveforms with the roland synths used in that game.

Although I don't regret buying it I sure do wish the Sound Canvas VA contained all samples from super mario galaxy 1 & 2 and judging by the sounds from SCIOS the results would be the same. Nice remake of flying mario though!

I think someone here once said they heard a roland fantom in super mario galaxies soundtrack?
by baggagelizard at 3:45 AM EDT on June 8, 2016
didn't really remake it; the song data is midi in the game

SCIOS and SCVA are the same thing
by jimbo1qaz at 4:35 PM EDT on June 8, 2016
how did you rip the midi?
by Benjamin at 6:51 PM EDT on June 10, 2016
For PM:TTYD I found that the "zoom" sound used in Flurrie's theme and the Excess Express chapter intro theme comes from Ueberschall's "8 Bit Stylez", as SIDSFX048. Riddle Tower uses SIDSYN88, the Shadow Queen rebirth theme seems to use SIDPLY006, and Macho Grubba's battle theme uses SIDPLY010, and Luigi's theme uses one of the XTRADRM parts.

Does anybody else know if anything else from Ueberschall is used? I heard Chill House judging from a demo of it, but I couldn't find anything on it.
by Ghignarda at 4:46 AM EDT on June 11, 2016
Benjamin, thank you SO much for finding that out! :O I'm pretty sure that sample also plays in the intro to Bowser's Battle in Super Paper Mario (albeit subtly mixed).

by Benjamin at 7:43 AM EDT on June 11, 2016
It does. Super Paper Mario mainly had usage of the drum kits from that pack (noticably Look Out for Me and Mimi Battle).

I also think I may have also heard the Kirby 64 Dark Star drum loop in the demo of Ueberschall's "Antigravity Maneuvers", but that seems to include three sample packs and I'm not sure which one it comes from. I have been curious as to where the drum loops in that game came from for a while.

UPDATE: I found somewhat identical loops in DnB Resonance, at a slightly different pitch and not split, but I didn't find the loops related to the boss theme and Zero-Two battle.

Scouting for samples by alexnaveira at 10:15 PM EDT on June 11, 2016
Hey guys,

I realize a lot of you guys manage to find some really obscure libraries that are used in games and that's really cool - wondering how you look for sample libraries and VSTs based on one or two instruments?
by Benjamin at 10:40 PM EDT on June 11, 2016
For me, it's either by pure luck, what I've heard about, or listening to whatever demos I can find of whatever I come across.
by baggagelizard at 12:25 AM EDT on June 12, 2016
once you're familiar with the sounds, it's easier to pick them out.
by Ghignarda at 11:05 PM EDT on June 12, 2016
While this is only speculative, I have an inkling that "Sand in My Potion" from Shantae: Risky's Revenge constructed part of its groove from the Logic Pro loops Turkish Calm Riq, and Turkish Morning Oboe.
by starerik at 2:28 AM EDT on June 13, 2016
@Ghignarda Not sure, since Jake Kaufman uses Cubase and Ableton Live and not Logic. But maybe he owns Logic as well. Not seen him using it, though.
by Master_E at 7:35 PM EDT on June 13, 2016
@starerik

I've seen him compose on his Twitch stream a few times.

He combines presets like they're colors and fruit flavors. I honestly have never seen him make an instrument of his own design.
by jimbo1qaz at 11:39 PM EDT on June 13, 2016
what does that mean?
by baggagelizard at 4:04 AM EDT on June 14, 2016
I'm pretty sure virt has, or has had, a MOTIF
by Master_E at 2:37 PM EDT on June 14, 2016
Oh I thought we were talking about if virt combines presets not about what he uses.

Skimming isn't good for you, people.

Okay guys, it's time to get serious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMZ8P4Tdm8g what are your thoughts on this? Sounds pretty nice! Orchestral even. I think we're going to enjoy Breath of The Wild's soundtrack very much.

sounds live to me. Not entirely sure about the erhu.
by Benjamin at 7:07 PM EDT on June 15, 2016
I recently found that Super Mario Galaxy 2's Yoshi drums come from Ueberschall Brazil Electro (most likely cut from Bong125 b-#756, but I could be wrong because I didn't hear the non-loop bongos). The drum loop in Beach Bowl Galaxy seems to come from Bong125 a-#755 overlayed with a conga loop, but I don't know which loop the conga comes from.
by starerik at 2:25 AM EDT on June 16, 2016
@baggagelizard They recorded an erhu for MK8 DLC, would be weird not to for Zelda.
by alexnaveira at 2:13 AM EDT on June 18, 2016
Hate to spam but does anyone have any idea on where the drums are from in this game? It's streamed so it's a VST and it's in multiple tracks

Not entirely sure what you mean by streamed = VST.
by Nisto at 9:22 PM EDT on June 18, 2016
He probably just means that it's not likely that a composer would rip samples from a VST -- which would be required for sequenced music.
by starerik at 9:51 PM EDT on June 18, 2016
I don't really see the difference between sampling a VST and sampling a hardware synth, either way you're playing one note and recording it. With VST you don't have to hook up and record anything, just export the note/sound in your DAW. If you want that sound for your sequenced music you sample it. Would be weird if the composer went "but it's not hardware, so I can't use it.. oh well."

Besides, that's not what Alex was saying at all. Alex said that it's obviously a VST since the music is streamed. Galaxy has streamed music and is filled to the top with analog hardware gear.
by Nisto at 10:23 PM EDT on June 18, 2016

In the case of sequenced music, I only had sample CDs in mind. Most VSTs I've seen don't allow you to export samples. Sure, it's not impossible to "export" them otherwise, but I figure composers may at least be discouraged if restricted to doing sequenced music. Also, I've never owned or used any music gear, so I'm not sure how easy (or at all) if hardware samples are directly rippable. I do have a vague memory of reading about, or seeing something being ripped (without recording) from some gear though.

Besides, that's not what Alex was saying at all. Alex said that it's obviously a VST since the music is streamed.
Not sure what you are implying here. Did you misinterpret my previous post as saying that the Galaxy music was sequenced? I was merely comparing to sequenced music.
