Any Good Wii Homebrew Stuff? +How To SoftMod by wolupgm6 at 3:34 AM EDT on July 3, 2009
I recently SoftModded my Wii with BannerBomb and installed the Homebrew Channel (along with BootMii and DVDx).
I currently have Snes9xGx, VisualBoy Advance GX, FCE-Ultra, Super Mario War Wii And DOSBox Wii. Are there any other Homebrew applications that I should know of? I've checked on wiibrew.org, and there's not much there that I'm interested in.
Anything will do, but my preference is a N64 emulator. It doesn't matter if its in beta stage or is incomplete. I only have the Wii64 current build off sourceforge.
If you can find Starshot, I'll tag it for you most definitely.
Softmodding is pretty simple, depending on you System Menu Version. To check, just go into the WiiSettings menu. It should be in a corner somewhere (can't remember where offhand, but its hard to miss). Mine was version 3.1E.
Next, go to WiiBrew.org and search for Twilight Hack or BannerBomb. It's your choice which one to use (unless you're using System Menu 4.0 or don't have Zelda - Twilight Princess, in which case you're stuck with BannerBomb).
I used Bannerbomb. All I did was downloaded it from the provided site off WiiBrew, formatted my SD Card as FAT32 using an SD Card Reader and unzipped the archive to the root of the SD Card (so all that was there was a folder called "Private"). I also downloaded the HackMii installer and copied the .elf file in the archive to the root of the SD card and called it boot.elf.
Next, I turned my Wii on, clicked Settings>Data Management>Channels and a message came up, asking whether or not I wanted to load boot.elf/dol. I said yes, and then installed the HomeBrew channel, BootMii and DVDx, all provided with the HackMii installer.
If you want any further information or want to know how to place HomeBrew applications on the SD card and get the HomeBrew channel to load them, just ask.
There is always a small percentage that your Wii will become Bricked, giving that when the mod is applied incorrectly, your Wii will have the functionality of a brick.
USB Loader GX is great, just a shame that the only caddy I have is IDE and the 120Gb IDE drive died on me x_x
Takes awhile to figure out how to config and get installed fully, especially as the forwarder isn't very well documented. Get homebrew channel installed first which is easy to do using bannerbomb.
And don't upgrade to system 4.0 or you'll have trouble with WAD files. Took me forever to downgrade and get a custom IOS249 installed which means I can use 4.0 and still install WADs
I found Wii64 (Mupen64 Wii Port) and it seems to be the only 64 emulator currently functioning, and it isnt that great. If anyone finds a 'decent' emulator, please tell me!
Please note that I'm not trying to insult the emulator. It's just not very natural to play Mario 64 in slow motion with and textures randomly popping up.
Cool! Looks like I have everything needed. Now if I was looking for a fast disk dumping utility for the will (for legal purposes, of course...), what would be the fastest? I have version 1.2 of Waninkoko's DVD Dumper currently, and it only goes about 2mb per minute.
