What plugin are you using? Are you using Highly Theoretical, or are you using aoDSF? If you're using HT, then there's known problems with that plugin, and they won't be fixed. If you're using aoDSF, then what version are you using? If you're using aoDSF v. 0.02 (the most recent version I see), then you need to go to the Audio Overload forums, and report the problem (look here).

Which files/songs are exhibiting the problems? I've gone through the whole DSF set, and matched up the files to their OST counterparts (I haven't made a batch, or anything yet though). To my untrained ear, everything sounded decent (could be better, but it's also been getting better as well). Chances are that if you're already using the most recent version of aoDSF, then it's an emulation error. I'm pretty sure that the rip is good (that is, if you played it on the actual DC hardware, it would be 100% correct). The emulation code could still use a lot of work though (it's pretty good overall though).

Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. Mouser X over and out.

Have any Xbox 1 or Xbox 360 game soundtracks been ripped directly from the disc? I have a Conker - Live and Reloaded soundtrack I've put the most work into of anything I've done, which I plan to release at some point. But right now it features a few songs with SFX, as faint as I could get them when recording in-game.

Yes, both Xbox and X360 games have been ripped. However, many X360 games use XMA which is currently not understood. As such, any game that uses XMA can't be decoded yet. Most Xbox (or X360?) games use WMA, WAVM, and a few other oddball formats, most of which are supported with in_cube. I think Conker: Live and Reloaded uses XMA, but I honestly don't know. I know that Blue Dragon uses XMA. Too bad too, since that one has actually been ripped (HCS ripped it, but hasn't distributed it, since it's an unsupported format. And it's huge. IIRC, very, very, very big). You'd have to find out from FastElbJa about Conker. He most likely knows what format it uses. Mouser X over and out.

Yea, its really too bad for XMA to be unsupported because I like Blue Dragon's Music and whats even worse for me is that Sonic the Hedgehog (X360) uses XMA so im very disappointed. The Weird part of Sonic the Hedgehog is that it says it uses Criware......Strange

It may use CRI just for video.

Possibly, but the fmvs like the intro to the game uses wmv.

Some songs that are showing problems are the battle themes, airship songs, valua, and escape military base song. They are missing the main background beat. I have the latest version of the aoDSF plugin. Maybe I need to downgrade versions? Otherwise, maybe you could send me or host up the files you have to compare with mine. Maybe I have a bad set, but I just beat the game a few weeks ago, so the music is fresh in my head. I have to work all day tomorrow, so I won't have time to play around with it, but any help Mouser X would be appreciated. You have been a great help so far and I thank you.

Well, it sounds to me like you need to mention this in the Audio Overload forum. I didn't notice anything wrong when I listened/compared the DSFs with the OST (actually, I did notice a few things, but I attributed most of it lack of reverb. Of course, since it's still in development, it's quite likely there were other problems as well), but I certainly could have missed something. I'm going through it again using aoDSF 0.02. They've been working on the AO library, so it's certainly possible that it's undergone a change since I heard it last.

In regards to the battle themes as airship songs, you need to keep in mind that both of those are "dynamic" songs. That is, they change based on the situation. It *seems* that the boss battles/main baddies music is split into multiple parts to accommodate this feature (changing based on how well you're doing), but I haven't actually encountered the variations of the airship themes (Silver Moon is "chimey," Green Moon has drums, etc.). Because they're dynamic, those ones might need to be reripped. It might even require ripping from a savestate (if I understand correctly, many of the DSF and SSF sets have been ripped using a semi-automated process. Since I don't know how that works, I will say it's possible that the dynamic variations were missed when it was ripped, but I could be wrong. Like I said, I don't know how it works, so I don't know if it would have ripped the variations or not. But I do know that I have not encountered most of the variations, excluding the "split" versions).

If you want any additional help that I can offer (not much), then I'd need to know the specific file names of the tracks you find to be a problem (I haven't renamed my files yet, so those will still be the same). Also, could you try out the Highly Theoretical plugin? I know there's problems with it (I encountered a few when I was testing between HT and aoDSF), but I'm curious to know if the problems are present in HT as well as aoDSF. Just to make this clear, HT is dead. Regardless of how complete it sounds, it won't be updated. This is why I recommend aoDSF, and why I recommend you bring up any problems to the Audio Overload forums.

One last thing. Are you comparing the DSFs to the OST, or to the actual game? If you're comparing them to the actual (Dreamcast version) game, then it might be helpful to have in-game recordings. Understandably, the AO guys won't take a bug report seriously if you're comparing against the OST. The problem is that the OST is often "revamped" so that it might actually be better than the music used in the game. As for the Gamecube version, that has the same problem as the OST. Since it's a port, it's possible that the music was "tampered" with, resulting in something that's different from the original (Dreamcast) version. However, even if you're comparing against the GC version, it could still help to have in-game recordings.

Here's the files that I've listened to recently (since you pointed out a problem), and have heard differences in (compared against the OST. I'd have to do some nasty digging to compare against the GC version. I lost my GC memory card...):

soa-367-04-00.minidsf (111 Battle 1 on the OST)
soa-352-03-00.minidsf (116 Bombardment)
soa-366-04-00.minidsf (See above (duplicate?). Both are missing the "tats" or something)
soa-300-02-00.minidsf (126 The Little Jack - it is missing something, but I'm almost certain this is due to the dynamic nature of the song.)
soa-329-03-00.minidsf (127 Imperial Theme - I'm noticing a trend here. It seems that similar instruments are missing)
soa-305-02-00.minidsf (128 Lower City Valua. I noticed the missing instruments around 0:45-:47 in)
soa-320-02-00.minidsf (139 Military Facility Dungeon. This one is missing instruments (follows the previous pattern of missing instruments), and it's got something that sounds pretty darn funny in there as well)
soa-301-02-00.minidsf (209 The Delphinus - It seems that with both this and The Little Jack, that the missing part is the "dynamic" section. That is, unlike most dynamic songs, instead of having all areas play simultaneously (Silver, Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow and Red areas all playing at the same time), they're missing completely)
soa-348-03-00.minidsf (213 Nervous Crisis (2) - follows the trend, it seems)
soa-368-04-00.minidsf (214 Battle 2 - Seems to follow trend)

Those are all the ones that I noticed a problem in (excluding a few which seemed to be suffering from shortened instruments. This may be due to reverb), but I didn't check all the files either. I only checked a select few; the ones I thought might be the ones you were referring to. If you're interested, here's a list of the DSFs which aren't in the OST:

soa-307-02-00.minidsf
soa-323-02-00.minidsf
soa-342-03-00.minidsf
soa-345-03-00.minidsf
soa-346-03-00.minidsf
soa-353-03-01.minidsf
soa-355-03-00.minidsf
soa-359-03-00.minidsf
soa-361-03-00.minidsf
soa-362-03-00.minidsf
soa-363-03-00.minidsf
soa-364-03-00.minidsf

Last, but not least: If you post a bug report on the Audio Overload forums (which, listening to this I'd recommend. Perhaps the rip is bad? I get the impression that those missing instruments might not be present at all. I don't know. I don't have the hardware (a Dreamcast) to find out), please *don't* just copy what I've written here. Because I've compared against the OST, I don't expect them to pay attention to anything I've said. Also, there are some people on that board who "shoot first and ask questions later." They're very pessimistic. I'm not sure why, but they'll assume you're a jerk first, and respond accordingly. If you *really* want to post a bug report (which is still recommended), then do it in the absolute nicest possible way you can. Read over it twice, and then make it even nicer.

Just a heads up. Hope that helps. There's really little else I can do than to say "You're right. There does sound like there's a problem here." Perhaps later I'll downgrade aoDSF and try again, to see if a previous version played the missing sections (I'm certain I've never heard the dynamic sections. Those have never been played, as far as I can remember). Mouser X over and out.

I tried Highly Theoretical and I think it actually works better and it even fixed some of the songs. Still, those battle songs, lower valua, and escape from the military facility dungeon are missing their main backround instruments and beats. I wish someone would actually be able to rip the files directly from the GameCube disc of the game, so I can see if there is a different between that and the Dreamcast versions. Maybe the songs were changed, but I don't know. I personally have never played the Dreamcast version, I beat it on Gamecube. Maybe that is why I think some of the songs are messed up? If someone could rip the music from the GameCube game and host them up here, that would be awesome. Otherwise I think I will stick with the Highly Theoretical plugin for now, until something is done to the aoDSF plugin or the files themselves are re-ripped and fixed.

So, does anybody know how to get the music from the two PSP games I mentioned earlier; Jeanne D' Arc and Brave Story: New Traveler? Can anyone rip those games and host the files up in this thread? Thanks!
by bxaimc at 3:01 PM EDT on May 12, 2008
@stahn1456 -

Brave Story: New Traveler contains files that are either sequenced or streamed but i can't tell because the files have extensions like .sgd, .jnz, .bsz, .jnt, .bmd, .eld, and .bst.
