- P97+98 Cup is short for '97 and '98 Cup, the P added just to keep it with
the other cups.
http://img330.imageshack.us/img330/2721/cup980bm.png <- Here is an image of
the two cups specific to the Japanese version. The one selected, the 98 Cup,
is based off the original cup from the first Pokemon Stadium. It even has
the music (which those "unused" battle tunes are). The top left image shows
the US Poke Cup image, but it is based off the original Poke Cup in Pokemon
Stadium 1 in Japan and has only one set of battles. It is the 97 cup,
although the rules are exactly the same as in the US Poke Cup. The one in
the top center is the 99 Cup, and is for Pokemon from levels 1 to 50. It has
Poke Ball, Great Ball, Etc. But oddly, some seemingly random Pokemon cannot
compete in this cup. They are...
Venusaur, Dugtrio, Alakazam, Golem, Hypno, Electrode, Exeggutor, Chansey,
Kangaskan, Starmie, Jynx, Tauros, Gyarados, Lapras, Ditto, Vaporeon,
Jolteon, Snorlax, Articuno, Zapdos, Dragonite, Mewtwo, Mew
The 99 Cup in the Japanese version uses the Poke Cup music in the US
Version. The 97 Cup in the Japanese version uses the same music as in the 98
Cup.

- EDIT: Whoops, beaten to the punch. Oh well, here's a more detailed explanation.
The 97+98 cups were cups specific to the Japanese verison. I added the P so it would fit in with the other cups. But because I don't know Japanese, I usually just call them Cup 97 and Cup 98. Anyhow, to wit...
LOL TWO EXTRA CUPS
The top left one was Cup 97. It was based on one of the cups from the original Japanese Pokemon Stadium, and had the Poke Cup rules from the US version. Cup 98 was for Pokemon Levels 1-30. It is also based on the original Japanese Pokemon Stadium. The following Pokemon can compete in Cup 98.
Beedrill, Fearow, Pikachu, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, Primeape, Arcanine, Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, Magneton, Cloyster, Gengar, Onix, Hypno, Electrode, Exeggutor, Chansey, Kangaskan, Starmie, Scyther, Jynx, Pinsir, Tauros, Gyarados, Lapras, Ditto, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Aerodactyl, Snorlax
Also, I actually went through it with rentals. Ironically, I made excellent picks (Vaporeon, Jolteon, Nidoking, Alakazam, Gengar and Lapras) and won. The order of the trainers goes like this.
Hiker
Sailor
Swimmer
Tamer
Cueball
Mr. Fix
Biker
Old Man
Cup 98, while having the Poke Cup rules, only has one set of battles like Pika Cup and Petit Cup.
Cup 99, which is the one in the middle with Hitmonlee, Porygon and Seaking, has different rules. It is for Pokemon from levels 1-50. It has the Ball Classes, and strangely, the following Pokemon *CANNOT* compete.
Can't compete in 1~50 Cup
Venusaur, Dugtrio, Alakazam, Golem, Hypno, Electrode, Exeggutor, Chansey, Kangaskan, Starmie, Jynx, Tauros, Gyarados, Lapras, Ditto, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Snorlax, Articuno, Zapdos, Dragonite, Mewtwo, Mew
Also, Cup 99 uses the music used from Poke Cup in the US Version. Cup 97 and Cup 98 use the same music, which is also from the original Japanese version. I haven't tried that cup out, yet, nor have I tried Cup 97. It's easy to see why these cups were dropped. Oddly, Cup 97, which has the image of the US Poke Cup, uses the arena with the floating lights depicted in the background of the image! In the US version, this only shows up during Battle Now, but oddly enough, it is labeled in the Photo Center as being "Poke Cup." (the Japanese version didn't have the Photo option in the game, so it is specific to the US version. Therefore, Cup 97, Cup 98 and Cup 99 were probably cut off after they did the photo center and translation).

- I see. What about the "Free Battle" music? Should I change it and use your name for it? Would that be more accurate?
I'll go ahead and get started on the final bits of editing and tagging tomorrow. Hopefully we can have that last track deciphered by then.

- Free Battle and Cup 97/Cup 98 Battles 1-3 are the same music, but it'd be preferred to do something like XX: Cup 97+98 Battles 1-3 and Free Battle

- The message reads (in Japanese):
Nintendo Cup 98 - Level 1~30
98nen dai 2 kai Pokemon RIIGU RUURU de no BATORU. Kenkyuu shitsukusareta tegowai KAPPU.
...just in case you were wondering.
And the English version Pokemon names suck.
I prefer the original Japanese.

- So, how's this coming along? I'd really like to get this out at some point.
- by Synthesis at 7:23 AM EST on December 8, 2005
- There's only 1 track left unnamed. I would really like to get this track figured out before I finish retagging.
- by hcs at 8:20 AM EST on December 8, 2005
- Alright, looking forward to it.
- by SystemError at 10:37 AM EST on December 31, 2005
- So, have we figured out what that unknown track is yet?
- by Synthesis at 8:04 PM EST on January 2, 2006
- To be honest, I want to say this track is in the Japanese release as well; but I have no substantial evidence to say so. ?_?
