- UF, what you described is Classic Mode (i.e. the short single-player mode in Melee and Brawl modeled after the 64 version's single-player). That, I will admit, does fit the description you gave. But since when does a multiplayer game even need a sensible storyline? For that matter, since when does DKR either? Games where story isn't the main focus can afford to have stories that aren't airtight.
But anyway, I'm talking about the Subspace Emissary story mode, which is predominantly a side-scrolling beat 'em up with Smash Bros. mechanics. It's reported to take between 7 to 10 hours to play through. The good guys team up against new villains, and the new villains seem (from what I've seen) to have established villains (Bowser, Ganondorf, etc.) working for them somehow. So in other words, no illogical battles like you've mentioned. Established good guys fighting new and established bad guys in battles that make sense from a narrative point of view.
Most of the scenes in the game's intro are cutscenes taken from this story mode: http://youtube.com/watch?v=C8KHUmADIO0.
And some sample gameplay: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Qc0EuCDE04w
Actually, the first stage of the story mode actually seems to establish the entire concept of trophy characters fighting trophy characters in the narrative context as friendly battles. It opens with Mario vs. Kirby, after which the loser is turned back into a trophy. After the fight, the winner taps the trophified loser, the loser turns back to normal, and the shake hands and wave to the crowd together.

- Whether it's classic mode, adventure mode or whatever mode, you're still a bunch of trophies fighting against a hand or whatever.
But enough about gameplay.
crediar has got a dump of the disc, but he hasn't posted the music yet. Lazy bastard.

- To each it's own, but seriously, I don't care if the game has a story so long as I'm having fun. I have, with past Smash Bros, so I'm certain I'll like Brawl.

- Regarding number of platforms in stages, I was pretty sure some of the more recently-revealed stages had some more variety. But you get a stage designer in Brawl, and that's just awesome.

- I just read that there are 200+ songs in this game's soundtest. Madness. This stuff can't be posted soon enough.

- In fact there are 314 (!!!) tracks on the disc.

- It seems that there are 314 music (non SFX) tracks in the game. Do you think its stream format will be compatible with the current in_cube plugin?

- crediar reports that the streams work in in_cube.

- The music streams are in the BRSTM format. So, yes, it can be played with in_cube. :)

- Reading up on Smash World Forums, I found a torrent on The Pirate Bay that's made up of all streams that are playable with in_cube. I dunno if I'd be allowed to link to it though...
It's the only torrent under the "audio" category with "Smash Bros Brawl" in its title. :P
